Sometimes when I try to open a document it opens up with a different program that I don't want. What's going on? Sometimes an application will hijack files for one reason or another. Here's how to change it.
Find the file and Control-click on it. Choose the "Get Info" option. (You can also click on the file once and do the keystroke Command + I). A new window will open with a bunch of drop-down options. Click on the little arrow next to "Open with:". In the little drop box find the program that you want the file to open in. To make sure that ALL of this file type are opened with the same program click the little "Change All.."
In the example below I wanted my onlinegrades.txt file to always open with TextEdit.
