Buy default, when you take a screenshot on your Mac the file format output is .png. But you can change that according to this tip by maclife.com. It asks you to open up the utility called Terminal and cut and paste two formulas, which is easier than it seems. I have mine set to jpg because I feel like I use jpgs more than any other format and they play nice with most browsers and Moodle.
