I got sick of looking at that old, gray icon for my hard drive so I looked for a way to replace it (and other icons) and discovered it's pretty easy.
First you need to find the icon you want to use. Here are the results of a Google search. When you find an icon you like copy it by holding down Control and clicking on the picture (or right-clicking on a two-button mouse) and selecting Copy so it's saved to your Clipboard.
Next click once on the icon you want to replace, in this case my hard drive. Then click File > Get Info and in the window that opens up you'll see the current icon in the upper-left hand corner. Click on that old, tired icon and then go to Edit > Paste (or Apple + V) and you'll have yourself a cool, new icon like mine.
